Built in 1971, the existing Brutalist structure embraced the architectural Field Theory movement of Walter Netsch; creating the interior layout using a series of rotated equilateral triangles. The renovation design is based on the fundamentals of this classic architectural style, yet responds to the flexible needs of the modern day library. Using elements such as light, color, and geometry, the two dimensional static form of the former library transitions to an elevated three-dimensional dynamic form that is energetic and welcoming.

Size: 58,500 Square Feet (the branch activities are on the main level while the lower level houses the Facilities Management function of the Library System)
Discovery Reef: Planned as an interactive learning destination, the Children’s Room takes the vibrant underwater theme to the next level with a 270-gallon salt water aquarium, colorful overhead lightning that simulates the underwater experience, a reef wall searing area complete with like-like exotic fish, a story time room that replicates a deep sea habitat and a glowing tube of moving bubbles.
Technology: 66 PCs are available for public use as well as a low-vision screen reader/magnifier system. The training lab contains 15 laptops for public instruction. A fax, scanner/digitizer and color printer are located in the publishing center. 3D printing, virtual reality and gaming are available in the Teen Zone. Digital signs throughout the building provide information on the branch including upcoming programs and meetings. All seating areas have easy access to power for customers who bring their own devices.
Other Features: A dual-head charging station is available in the parking lot for electric vehicles. The building contains a vending café, Friends bookstore and a water bottle filling station.
Books & Materials: The current collection numbers over 50,000 items (including books, DVDs, audiobooks & magazines) with a future capacity of 80,000 items.
Art in Public Places: Convergence of Knowledge by Alan Binstock: a multi-color resin and aluminum mobile.
