STEM Lab: Into the Woods with Chemistry

Presented by the Maryland Section of the American Chemical Society

Join a chemist from the American Chemical Society for a hands-on program on the chemistry of trees and forests. This program is appropriate for ages 7 and up (grades 2-12). Students aged 7-8 must be accompanied by an adult.

The program will include the following hands-on activities along with relevant discussions:

• Microscopy of leaf specimens
• Observation of leaves under ultraviolet light
• Observation of hydrophobicity (tendency to repel water) by leaves
• Building of glucose molecules
• Observation of hydrogen bonding in water models 
• Testing for starch in several materials
• Separation of pigments in leaf specimens by paper chromatography
